Ocean Thunder Europe (OTE) is an off-shoot of the OT series in Australia. A debut event is now set for 6 September 2008 and will be held at Grande Plage, Biarritz in south-west France. This is a perfect venue for racing surf boats equal to any other in the world.
The contest will be “Open” in that any crew wishing to compete will be able to do so, subject to meeting basic safety standards. The event will be filmed for TV distribution.
The best OT teams from Australia will attend and lock horns with all comers not just from Europe but also the rest of the world with prize money on offer to the winning crews. A promotional film can be viewed above.
There is burgeoning interest in surf rowing in the UK and across Europe. At the recent UK Open, a third of the 36 teams who raced hailed from still water rowing and boating clubs, such as Molesey BC, Twickenham RC and Marlow RC, with the balance drawn from the surf life saving clubs that have traditionally been the backbone of the sport.
French and Dutch international rowers have already expressed interest and with the event coming three weeks after the 2008 Olympics, competitors should be in peak physical condition. It is not expected that the Australians will have an easy ride.
As previously stated the event is “Open.” If you are interested in taking part or want to find out more contact:
